This is part two. If you missed the first part, read it here. Over the next few months Richard and Noel could be seen constantly shooting at poor blood-suckers or competing at target practise. They were never without their guns. They were taught how to shoot, and clean their guns and most important to be careful when people were about. The daisy was not a powerful gun and unsupervised, they were only allowed to use darts instead of pellets. Richard and Noel, were not unlike a lot of other young Anglo-indian boys -- and girls too, it must be said-- who were proficient in the use of firearms. It was part of AI tradition.
Every now and then, the men at Edgars block would arrange a "big game hunting party".Noel's dad gave in to taking Noel along,so Richard's dad decided to take him along also."they would keep each other company".he said."and anyway its time they learned how to hunt." Richard's mum however, still worried about the whole thing. He was 10 years old now and with a sigh, she realised that soon-- too soon maybe-- he would be a young man. Ah well! The day arrived, charged with excitement. It all started with the arrival of the company tipper truck."Are we going in the truck dad"asked Richard "yes", said his dad " you and Noel, are riding in the front with uncle Ian".(who was the driver)Everything was loaded up,and with the whole block cheering them, eight men and two young boys set off for a village near "kamasamudra forest" on "a hunting trip".After what seemed like a very long journey,to Richard and Noel, they reached the village. It looked as if the villagers were expecting them, because they all gathered around and began unloading the stuff from the truck, and into a bullock cart. Then uncle Ian said "see you tomorrow, about twelve noon",jumped into the tipper and drove away. Richard's dad and the other "uncles",were talking, very intently to a villager. Then dad came over and told Richard and Noel that they were going to have some lunch in an hour, and in the meantime they were going to shoot some wild dog that were always hanging around the village. It seems that, some of these dogs were rabid, and were quite daring in their raids on the village.they would even attack young children,if the villagers were not careful."No,I'm sorry you and Noel cant come, its too dangerous, stay here,we'll try not to be too long, and then we'll have some chicken curry and rice for lunch". Well that was alright then,a nice big fat bribe. They both decided to go looking for myna nests or even baby parrots to pass the time. Suddenly, a shout went up.Everyone was cheering and shouting, and running to the end of the village. The eight AI "shikaris"(hunters)walked proudly in front of a whole gang of village men,who were dragging quite a few dead dog carcasses, tied to ropes. They had managed to shoot six wild dogs.We all then sat under a tree, and a village man came up to dad with a cycle tube around his neck. The booze had arrived."Come on men, have a wet"(have a drink).they all jumped up,but no one had any mugs or glasses to drink from, only canteens of water. In the end all The shikaris drank their"zut"(country, grog)from Richard and Noels air rifle pellet tins. Then they had lunch. The chicken curry was very "chilly hot"(only forty chillies chile!!!) "Dad whats this long slimy thing, looks disgusting"said Richard."Eat it" said uncle Pat,"its good for you"
They soon realised, that the village cook wastes nothing. The feet, the head, the guts? were all cooked.Of course, needless to say "The Shikaris" now, very merry on their "zut, fut, put" really enjoyed their lunch (with much finger licking) .After they had a fag,it was time for forty winks.------Reminds me of a song that used to be sung at Saidapet feast in Madras.
