This beautiful story was sent in By Ernest Ignatius. This is the first of three parts to this.
Written by Logan Niadin.

Part one.
Edgars block in Mysore mine consisted of two rows of six granite stone houses, front doors facing each other, with a road running through.Edgars mine where Richards dad and all the other men (all AI's) worked, was about two hundred yards away, they could literally fall out of bed and into a "gold mine". The houses were nice.In the front was a garden, where Richard's mum grew her vegetables and flowers -- she was a keen gardener. Then the steps leading up to the veranda, straight into the living room/dining room. To the right was a large bedroom.

At the back of the living room was a pantry, where the meat-safe and all the provisions were kept. There
was a bath room attached to the bedroom with commodes.Richard would remember "commodes" for a long long time. It was a saturday and Richard's friend Noel came round to play. The guava season was nearly there, but Richard's dad said "dont eat any guavas,Richard, they're not quite ready yet. "Ok dad" said Richard and off he went. That evening, during dinner,Richard's dad asked him if he ate any guavas and Richard said "no dad". "Are you sure? "Yes dad". The next morning Richard got up, did his business, washed, dressed and went to church. When he came back, his dad asked him again about eating guavas, again he denied eating any.His dad then took him by his ear, to the bathroom and showed him
proof, IN THE COMMODE.

What a belting he got, with his own plastic belt, for telling lies.

Anyway, to carry on with the house -- there was a large back yard, with a godown -- like a garden shed, but made out of tatty (bamboo) slats--,in one corner-- and a kitchen in the other corner. Close to the house was a standpipe for fresh water the godown contained chopped up wood for cooking and all Richard's dad's underground gear, also the ducks used to be kept in there to fatten-up  for Christmas -- you dont want to know about that -- suffice to say it was an early form of intensive farming.

Talking about christmas --- it was nearly here. School had closed for the christmas holidays, and Richard could'nt wait to see what santa had for him. On christmas day, everyone went to church in their new clothes and shoes. Richard was looking forward to lunch, you guessed it "Duck Vindaloo" and coconut rice, loads of cul-culs and rose-cookies, and the grown-ups would have Aunty Mercy's "Oatee"(AI ginger wine).

Later that evening everyone -- the whole block, would walk down to the mysore mine club hall, where, all the children, with plenty to eat and drink, were entertained by a magician, played games on the polished wooden dance floor and waited for their presents from santa claus.Everybody would sit on the floor and when your name was called, you would go up on to the stage and get your christmas present from Santa. When Richard's name was called he flew up the stairs, his eyes fixed on the present in Santa's hands -- it was huge, his heart was thumping--what was it? What was in that big package? In his
excitement he was'nt looking where he was going, and as he reached out for his big present, tripped over his own feet and fell, head first into Santa's lap. Santa fell over backwards, but as he fell, Richard somehow, managed to grab hold of his present.

Everybody in  the  hall burst out laughing, Santa was helped up, and Richard, red-faced with embarassment, said "thank you" to him and ran off the stage. He was intercepted by his dad, who, still laughing said "and what has santa brought you this year Richard?" "go on,open it" Richard tore off the wrapping paper and looked with his mouth open at a canvas gun case.He undid the knotted twine that fastened the flap and took out a brand new, shiny air rifle.

Through tears of joy and astonishment he looked at his dad, "its a Daisy, (a half sized air rifle) Richard,"  said his dad, "just like the one your friend Noel has, now put it away and I'll show you how to use it tomorrow."

I love that Richard character. These stories remind me of that hindi show "Malgudi days" if anyone remembers that!

Richard reminds me of that kid.

Nice, waiting for part 2 and 3
