Summer School Print E-mail

I'm pretty sure, no matter where you grew up, you had Summer School, most probably organised by your local church. As a kid, I loved it and hated it at times. Now, I just have a lot of fun memories. Since it is summer in India, share with is your fun, or other memories from Summer School, whether you were attending as a kid or a teacher or was (are) just a parent!

Hi Gav,

Yes, you were one of the Animators at Summer Camp and that is how I got to know you and your sister's Ursula and Yolly, who were Animators too and there were a lot others whose names will take me a long time to type down here.

Also I got to know the whole Aynavaram Congregation while my participation during such events hehehe, so it was definately the best days of my life atleast!!!!

Cheers to that!!

Summer Camp

Monique - I was at that Summer Camp and was one of them Animators as we were Salesian Cooperators and we took on the task of running those summer fest. I guess your recount of this camp was absolutely what happened and I can't forget it myself. It was one of the best we've had as we had a good crowd during that fest. Those were the days of our lives. Thanks for helping me walk down that lane again.

An Unforgettable Experience...

Well People, I know I am a bit late on commenting on articles here, but I promise you will have each article with my comment just as it used to have before.

So getting back to My Summer Camp days. Well, well, well, what can i say but East or West Aynavaram Don Bosco's Summer Fest was the Best.

As far as I remember, we would have Summer Fest which lasted for 10 days every summer beginning from May 1st or 2nd week, and believe me my dear people it was so much fun, you can ask anybody from Aynavaram, be it the 80's or 90's - Aynavaram Summer Fest was the best.

I have heard about the 80's from other parishioner's since I was living in Bombay then, but I can talk well about the 90's because I was there then.

So to begin with, we would start our summer camps with introduction to the teams we are going to be in for the rest of the Fest. So we would choose our group names which often would be of some hard rock band name such Guns N Roses, Green Day, Def Leppard etc.

Then we would begin our summer camp by Mass then walk to the school building behind church and start our Fun session in one of the biggest classrooms allotted for such summer camps.

Well, we would have Four or more Animators that is what we called them then, or volunteers as you may call them who would be from the Youth age group who conducted our games and fun sessions. And the priests and sister's who would conduct our biblical classes .
We also had stitching or sewing classes which allowed us to work on sewing machines and actually stitch our own cool stuff which we would think we could stitch, well we had only one hour of sewing class lesson everyday so No we don't make good sewer's.hehehe.

I remember almost all the games that we played and it used to be so much fun. We played outdoor games like : Queen of sheeba, Simon Says, treasure hunt, dodge ball, dog shots, seven stones, gosh i have actually forgotten lotta games, well yeah the boys played volley ball, football, cricket, I don't remember more games than this so i am gonna say etc..etc..hehehe.

We played indoor games like : Dumb charades, pinning the donkey's tail, shot put with balloons and Javlin with broom sticks hehe, the volunteers came up with games of their own such as peeling a sheet of newspaper in thin strips without the edges cutting off and the group who made the longest strip from newspaper would win, I don't remember 3/4 of the games because we had so many made up ones. we played such funny games which was totally entertaining and allowed each person in every group to participate fully in each activity. If you came to summer camp as shy person believe me at the end of summer camp you would go out having tons of friends and joking and laughing your way out.

We also would host singing and dancing competition among the groups and ofcourse the best and second best would rewarded. We also had cookery competition and the winning group would get to eat all the food lololol well just kidding, well actually it would add on to the points that we had to keep saving to be the No.1 on the last day of summer camp so we could actually be getting some wonderful prizes for standing first and also a Trophy from Church to keep with the winning team for One whole year until the next summer camp and then the trophy would get rolling to the next winning team.

Ahh. I am now exhausted writing you all this stuff and actually more exhausted pushing my mind way down beyond memory lane, i think i even got to the creeks and crevices of memory.

Yeah before i go i must tell you this people, ok, so there was this year 1995 when I was in summer camp and guess what, coincidently my older brother and younger brother too were in the same group called Dep leppard and in the beginning we were like "oh! why did we all have to land up in one group, can't we just split up" but no it was not allowed by the volunteers and so we had to stick with each other, well there were a lot more of people in our group but the mostly family and it all started off with a sigh but believe me or not it was the best summer camp of my life or our lives hehe. We were winning from day 1 and we would have so much fun being together and teasing each other, cracking up loudly and we just swept everybody off their feet, we stood first almost on all days but for certain days when we went to second place because we lost the cookery competition, we had geoffery as our cook but we still lost, but nevertheless we stood strong and we won with the highest points on DAY 10 and yipppeeee we all got our prize for standing first and also we grabbed our trophy and walked home Hailing the group we were in. I am not gonna tell you what we got as our First prize, you see my church did not make too much money then, so they could not afford to give any anything grand, but yeah i still have my prize with me, what more, Hail Aynavaram Parish. And we had the trophy with us for not 1 year but 2 years since the following year summer camp was cancelled due to some reason and we got our trophy keeping period extended.

Ohh yeah we also went to covelong as picnic on the 11th day of summer camp and we did everything there soon after mass, well the older people stayed at church and younger kids went to the beach yaayy.

This was the best Summer camp i ever had in my life.

Thank you My Brothers n Dep leppard team and Thank you Aynavaram Don Bosco Church for all the fun and frolic and also the prayer sessions and mass.

Puff..puff..I am really tired now, i gotta go now peepol, talk to you all later..

Summer Camps!

Unfortunately, I cant relate to the summer school you'll went to.

Over here, kids go to "summer school" if they flunked a class or more. If they dont do summer school and pass they repeat the grade.

The one time I went to school during the summer (in high school) was for Driver's Ed. Our churchs never provided summer programs like they do in India. Our church while growing up as teenagers was driving distance. Mum and Dad worked so we had to stay put at home. But, we did do a lot of reading, ride bikes and play Atari!!LOL

Now, there are "Summer Camps" that parents have to pay through their noses for (expensive). My youngest brother being a Boy Scout got to go to summer camps, band camps etc. Even Ken went to summer camps every summer of his life. His consisted of horse back riding, rowing, swimming etc.

Fast forwarding to the present...my daughter did dance camps, and nowadays computer camps, and band camps and volunteering at the local Library.
Rewinding back to the 70's before we moved to Texas....all I remember was the May devotions and morning mass. Other than that Dad used to take us by bus, to this small book shop somewhere passed the thousand lights Mosque and check out like 10 books and comics each. We had our own little library at home during the summers. Most of our friends would come over everyday and read in our living room. Mum would love it cause there would be pin drop silence for many hours during a hot summer afternoon!

LOL That's my Summer story! Nothing like the fun and spirituality you all experienced in Madras or elsewhere in India.

Covelong!

Forgot about mass in the morning.. i think it was mandatory if you were part of the Summer Fest.. and yes, Covelong beach and the attendance card. It was a yellow card, I remember that distinctly!

Good times! :grin
Summer Fest !!
Written by bev on 2007-05-08 05:56:36
Oh, my gosh... I remember Summer Fest. That was just one of the highlights of growing up in Perambur. Run for 6:00 o'clock (or was it 6:30?) mass in the morning, go back home for breakfast, go back to church for practice for the evening's competitions, go home at noon for lunch, then again run back to church for the evening's events at 4:00. The fetes, the singing & dancing competitions, the skits, the movies, the scorching May sun, the little attendance card that got signed, the many many couples that became "friendly"... and then the picnic to Covelong (ha ha)!! To go for the regular Sunday classes was such a bore compared to the high-intensity, exciting, jam-packed Summer Fest.
Summer Fest!

I remember "Summer Fest" as it was called in Perambur (Lourdes Church). Walking in the heat and then gathering in the hall for a short film (Charlie Chaplin!) and then singing Ging Gang Gooly! I think I remember Carlo Bosser was our teacher for one year.

I loved playing football after that. And at the end they had a sports day and I have to say that... ahem... I won the "Slow-Cycling" race.

Yes... I am the "Perambur Slow Cycling Champion of (82?)"... haha, it would be fun if I could find the certificate and upload a picture of it here!
