Michael and Janice and Rudy - Part VI

YOUNG LOVE

When  Michael and Rudy passed their middle school exams, their parents bought them , a Raleigh bike each. It was like giving them the freedom of the city. They went everywhere on their cycles. Church, school, the beach, marina swimming pool, the circus, the pictures, to each others house---- everywhere. It was as if they were stuck to their saddles. In the process they became top class riders and it was'nt a surprise to see them, on sports day entered for the slow cycle race.

One morning  as the boys were cycling to school,  they saw a girl in the uniform of St Teresa's (St martin's sister school)  cycling along just in front of them. They rode up to her , one on either side, "Hello Janice". They said together, and burst out laughing when she got a start. "Dont creep up on me like that, I nearly fell off".she said. They stopped laughing when they saw her face. "Sorry, said Michael, can we cycle with you?" " Only if you promise to behave yourselves". Stifling their laughter at her seriousness, they said "ok" and rode three abreast, chatting and
laughing.

It soon became a thing. They would meet at Kuniraman's in Royapuram in  the morning and after school at Naidu's bunk.  One day Rudy did'nt turn up. Michael and Janice waited awhile, but then decided to carry on, Rudy would
catch up. Turns out Rudy had jaundice and would have to stay at home for a few weeks. From the beginning there was a spark between Michael and Janice and now that Rudy was'nt around that tension was allowed to grow into a small flame.

A flame that would soon grow, into a fire. The two of them were cycling to school, one day when suddenly Janice's back tyre had a puncture. "cometh the hour, cometh the man".\i0  Michael coped with this
situation with ease, without being prompted. ---Cool. He put her crocked bike in the cycle stand at "Beach" ( local railway) station locked it and as all of this, took time and they did'nt want to be late for school -- Of course not.--- he very masterfully put Janice's books in the clip over the back tyre and said, "come on Janice, jump on!.------ Wow!

Not a word was spoken by either of them, their closeness was all they could cope with. (what else are crossbars for) The lump in Michael's throat  restricted his breathing. This was a sensation that was so good, so strange. The ride seemed to take forever but yet, suddenly, they were there -- at school. They snapped out of their trance when they noticed a few young boys watching them and giggling, and there were a few young girls doing the same. Suddenly it seemed as if the whole street  was filled with boys and girls laughing at them.

Janice did'nt even thank Michael, she grabbed her books and ran the rest of the way to the school gate and turned to see poor Michael still standing where she had left him. She gave him a little wave and walked into her school with a big smile on her face.

Michael walked into his school and stopped to watch Brother Dominic the chandler, making candles in the small room near the garages. His mind was in turmoil, but with elation rather than anxiety. Poor guy, he was still standing there when Soosai  the peon, rang the school bell.

Ernest, I like the way you softened the story with Michael and Janice's crush on each other! Brings back memories of my own school girl crushes! :)
