TAMIL MASTER'S BLESSINGS
Michael and Rudy usually had their lunch sent to the school from home in a tiffin carrier, so did a lot of other students. But sometimes their parents would give them some money to eat out. Their favourite place was the Udipi cafe opposite The High Court. The choice was always the same, meda vadai or meda bonda, or sadar dosai or masala dosai, or a combination of dosais and vadais, not forgetting Iddlys. A man, would come around with a bucket of sambar and flood their plates with the stuff. Chutney used to be on the side. When they finished they would go to naidus bunk and have a soft drink and a couple of stick-jaws or cumracuts.
One day while they were at naidus, after lunch, they were joined by Bobby And Clive. "Have you guys had lunch at Udipi's?" asked Bobby. "Yea" said Michael, with a big grin on his face. They all knew what that meant. All that sambar, ----loaded with asafotida and black salt----- looks like they were in for a farting session in class that afternoon. They had 2 periods of Tamil and Mr Sundaraja, who used to get really fed up with all the farting, would finally lose his temper and say, "If I catch the "Kaiday"(donkey) who is doing nasty smells, I will give him my blessings" --- which was a "bunkuth". (a thump on the back)-- Catching Michael sniggering he gave him a "kotu" and said. "Dai!! "Prancis" You will "depinitely pail" (He could'nt say his Fs) which would set off Patrick Tomkinson, with his laughing and farting at the same time, then he would get a "bunkuth" and the final put down "thalay lay, moolay illay-- chooth lay pee" Anyway I digress. Back to our four friends at naidus bunk. "Listen guys, said Bobby. Clive and I are going to The Little Mount Feast, this saturday, would you like to come?. It'll mean spending the night there, and coming home by lunchtime, on sunday". ----- Ok? Lets all meet at Beach station, at 4 PM. The Fagin brothers will meet us at St Thomas mount and then we'll all go on together.
