Train Journey Print E-mail

I received this poem from Maureen a long time back and never did get to publish it. Reading it again, I though I should publish it because it so simply paints a colorful picture!

By Maureen Buckley
The porter runs with my steel trunk on his head
By the time I catch up, I'm half dead.
A place by the window - he finds for me
A little extra "bhakshees", I'm comfy as can be.
Guard waves the flag, the engine chugs along

Passengers young and old, burst into song
Clapping of hands and stamping of feet
Do not go "walkabout" or minus your seat.
Sugarcane and paddy fields catch your eye
Farmers till the land,as the train passes by.
Vendors weave their way among the crowd
Selling their wares by shouting out loud.
"Murku,Vadas,Tyru-sadam" - mouth watering fare
Wrapped in leaves,prepared with care;
Each station stop, coffee, and "chai" are sold
You can bet your last rupee, it is not cold.
Ticketless travellers then come in you see
Chewing betel leaves,as happy as can be
Inspector walks in, some disappear in space
The ones that don't make it, are in disgrace.
They're made to get down at the next station
They jump in, till they reach their destination.
"Chokra" boys with brooms, they clean the place
Paper and bottles gathered, there's no waste.
There is a long, long waiting queue
They're all awaiting their turn, near the loo.
The journey soon comes to an end
And I wave goodbye to my new friends.

My Train Journey !
Written by monique on 2006-10-28 06:58:04
This Journey I did travel through,
All the way on tracks and oceans due.

The Coffee Guy did us past by,
Yelling " Hot Kappi " "Hot Kappi" like in a lullaby.

After a while he came back again,
Sneaking in and softly saying " Cold Capee" "Cold Capee".
This sure did crack us up,
He would do anything for his sales to go up.

He sold his coffee " Hot" and then the same coffee "Cold".
What can I say, but this guy was " Cheeky Bold".
Great!!

That was a really brilliant poem.....loved it. Reminded me of when our family went down once and my brothers trainers (sneakers) got stolen by one of the chokra boys!! My brother had to walk around Tatanagar train station barefeet!!! But, yes a great poem and such a true reflection.
Good Work!
