PROLOGUE
It was two thirty am on a cold wet Monsoon night in November when Ryan

stepped off the the late night bus on his return from work at the Taj Coromandel Hotel , He remembered the news bulletin that he had watched during his brief dinner break , “Cyclone to cross the East Coast between Madras and Pondicherry “said the Doordashan weather girl in her somber and monotonous voice . Now as he hurried in the darkness the rain came down in torrents , there was no where to shelter for a while so he began to jog down the long Road from the Kathipara junction , to the right of him were the old dilapidated buildings that once were beautiful homes and where many years back the Harts the Cronings the Freemans and a whole lot of other Anglo’s used to live before they all migrated from India , to his left was the huge expanse of the St.Thomas Mount Military Polo Ground that stretched out for about two Kilometers.

As he ran he remembered the stories that he used to hear when he was a kid that this stretch of road was haunted and the big Banyan tree was inhabited by a Munispiram and a Mohini that would posses the souls of any man they took a fancy to.  Ryan now reached the Back gate of St.Dominics Anglo Indian Girls High school , Completely out of breath he began to walk and as he turned towards the street leading down to Butt Road a dark figure approached him from the Verandah of Ratan Lal Sowcar’s Pawn shop , when he heard the familiar vanakam baba he realized it was old Thalaiyadi a beggar man who would wait for Ryan to pass each night so he could get some change for a cup of tea at Khader Bhai’s tea shop at the end of the road , after leaving Thalaiyadi with a steaming cup Ryan hurried the rest of the way home.

Careful that he does not make a noise and wake up the Girls or Mum Ryan quietly opened the door to his rented two bedroom flat at Regina apartments, what a bloody nuisance he thought to himself the first hint of rain and they cut the electricity , finding his way in the darkness he found the candle on the top of the chest of drawers that mum keeps handy for the frequent power outages that Madras was famous for , as soon as the Candle was lit mum called out “ Ryan you Ok my son ?” if your hungry I kept out some cutlets and chapattis on the meat safe just heat it up and eat”. I’m Ok Ma but its pouring cats and dogs outside and I since I’m off work tomorrow I promised to take the girls to Vandalur Zoo , but with this bloody weather we will have to see said Ryan , well Ok son you get some rest now , replied Ma . Ryan toweled himself dry and changed into his shorts and tee shirt and after kissing the girls lightly on the cheek , he settled down on his cot for the night.

Ryan kept tossing and turning he just could not seem to settle down and go to sleep , normally the sound of the pounding rain and the croaking of the frogs were enough to put him at ease , but tonight all the loneliness and heartbreak came flooding back , His six year love affair with Marcia , their eventual marriage , the joy of being blessed with lovely twin girls and the day Marcia left for Australia with the promise of “you and the Girls will be with me in Perth before the year ends”.

I can’t keep dwelling on the past , he said to himself and steeled himself to think about more pleasant things after all she deserted me and the two girls and she does not deserve to be missed . Thank God for mum without her where would I be ,  thought Ryan , and it was true his Five year old twin daughters Suzanne and Samantha absolutely adored mum and she became the mother they never knew ,  Eventually he drifted off to sleep , The Last thing he Remembered was the Strange words his neighbour old Uncle Kelly said to him a few days before he died last year , he said “Son you are entangled in the eiderdown”.

Raoul
This really brought back so many good memories of St Thomas Mount and the Banyan tree in the Military grounds. I used to walk past it every day with my cousing Gordon Anderson, from St Dominic School. Cant wait for part one.
