No, my name is... Print E-mail
This would especially apply to all the Anglo's who grew up in India. Your name would have been "murdered" and pronounced in so many different ways. I know nobody (non - Anglos) could get my name, I used to go by my middle name in some places. So, tell us about the funny ways people pronounced your name!

My name is Angus Rouse. "EDITED FOUL LANGUAGE" just cannot pronounce this Scottish name. Here are some corruptions of my name:

Angel :upset
Angle
Angel Rose
Anguf (this was printed on something I ordered over the phone..inspite of me actually spelling my name to the operator)
Axl Rose (I kinda like that one :grin
Once I had an Irishman spell my name as Aonghas - which is the way it is spelt in Ireland (the traditional Gaelic spelling)
Feelings are mutual

My name is NOT Vendi Reddy
Written by wendymary on 2006-09-08 01:27:09
I'm a teacher and didn't know there were so many variations to a simple name like Wendy Reid( SIMBLE?? read on.)
I've been called Reddy Teacher.
Windy Miss (!)
Windai
Vendi Reddy
Red Ma'am (? )
I've never been called by my actual name, even by priests and colleagues.( except the Anglos, naturally.)
So you see my name has been not only been murdered but diced, cubed, chewed and spat out.
I've always laughed about this and you have given me the opportunity to share this with others.
Thanks
Wendy

Eddie (A.D)
Written by eddieq on 2006-09-05 20:41:05
This is a true story------------
Years Ago!!!!!!!!! I used to work in Hotel in Calcutta. One evening a Guest (Sardaji) who was making small talk with me at the “Front Desk” asked me my name so I said “Eddie” he contemplated for a minute or two and then asked me was I born after the death of a child in the family to which I answered in the affirmative.

I was astonished that he can enlighten me on my family history from a name. So I encourage him to tell me more about my past and future and I am all thrilled by now with this skilled “Fortune Teller” in front of me, so I ask him “how do you know that I was born after the death of a child in the family” to which he replied with a straight face and without airs, down to earth attitude---- “your parents have named you AD so that is how I guessed After Death”.

I never could imagine my name could have so many variations but apparently it did
Once at the Doctor's Appointment they called for me several times and as usual I never answered because they kept calling PEEYAAHNA and PEEYAAHNO and then when we ended up being only 2 in the room the nurse screams at me saying "I called it out a thousand times-Where were you-Sorry your appointment is cancelled -poor me

Feena,Philipina and Fone akka was another but the best spelling of my name was Pheoina and Fiano so i had to explain it to them saying FIONA- O-Munnala -meaning-O in the front and A pinnala- A at the back

Finally my British boss just christened me with Fi-*phew*

Gonsalvez was
Go-sell-your-vase-Jeez
Konsul
Konsa
sometimes they din make and attempt so it was good

Yeah... That's me... My name's Ashwyn pronounced ash-win most of the time i get called ush-win, ass-win, us-win Thank god I had "anglo" teachers in school (who appreciated my mom's "genius" ;) ) so my name wasn't murdered to hell...

and oh... my wife's name Bridget is most often pronounced bridg-it!!! (by anglo's and non-anglos alike) :sigh
It is winston and kurt
Written by winstonkurt on 2006-08-29 05:00:21
i had to go from 1st name to 2nd name... 1st name as follows:

winistorn
winson
winton....... and this was way out
wansang .....
Then it was Kurt in office,

and while introducing my name , trying saying "my name is Kurt" ........ that "is kurt" will sound as SKIRT.....
talk about identity ........
I'm Nora and not Noora
Written by Nora on 2006-08-29 03:47:09
Having lived in Qatar since 1979 I'm quite used to people call me Noora. Some even think I'm a Muslim and to crown it all - an Arab because of my Mediterranean appearance. At first it was quite annoying, but as time went by I began to accept it. Some non-Arabs pronounce my name as Nawra, oops! what can I say? Whether it's Noora, Nawra, Norah or Nora, the meaning is the same - LIGHT, as in the light given by the sun or by a burning candle.
My name is...
Written by gavin on 2006-08-29 03:14:36
Gavin... In the electoral rolls/ration card it was spelt as Govan, was called as Kayvan by my tamil teacher in school. Not much of choices though given the name I had. I like it when people call me Gav... Cheers

But most of the time when people ask me whats my name and i say "Alison", they all go Oooh "Alice eh?", the name I HATE the most (and this was before the remix of Alice was made)
My dot's name is the best - " KRISTEN" u should hear people call her (even the Anglos) - some of them act as if "I" had got her name wrong. The famous ones are Christian and Crystal (for this i have to stress on the "n not l" in the name)others are Christine, Christina and Krispin.

with my name David,it was only the non-anglos who mispronounced it..Daoud(muslims), Daveed (all other indians) and Dabeed (Mexicans) :sigh ...my Dad's first name is Francis but most Indians called him Prancees :grin ..my little bro's name is Roger, but the servants called him 'Raja'...in fact on one of the feast days in St Thomas's Mount each year when all the beggars would come house to house begging for alms, Roger would be playing is the front yard and they would call out to him "Raja,Raja, paisa kudu Raja"...my bro was quite young at the time and he would run into the house terrified and ask Mum and Dad how was it that the beggars knew his name... :grin
Written by Domestic Engineer on 2006-08-28 12:04:54
That is probably because Anglos pronounce Annette as "An..nit" not Ann...net like we pronouce it here in the States. So any name ending in "ette" will always be "it".
It's Lynette damit!
