JALAHALLI
Bangalore was a joy to Michael. The nights and mornings were fresh and cold and the days were comfortably warm. He stayed at the company hostel. Everything was quite basic and he put his head down and studied hard. He had 9 fellow students and they came from all parts of the country. He was the only Anglo Indian.
Letters from Janice and home came every week and he would read all of them at least twice. Janice's letters tugged at his heart. But he cheered up and took comfort from the thought that she had Rudy for company. The weeks flew and soon he was looking forward to his leave, which he was entitled to take, after three months service. The latest letter he had from Janice worried him a bit, not her usual warm, happy self. She wrote that the "May Queen Ball" was on at the railway institute this Saturday and that although she would miss him, she was going to the dance with Rudy. Frowning a little, he sat down straight away and dashed off a loving letter to her. "Just think in four weeks time I'll be with you for a whole 10 days".
Perumal was a cook in Janice's home. Mr and Mrs Mark and Olga Henderson (Janice's dad and mum) were very lucky to have Perumal. His culinary skills were legend. From the humble curry puff (the pastry would crumble and melt in your mouth) to the most elaborate roast dinners you could dream of, Perumal was King. But Perumal had one bad habit, you guessed it "booze", illicit arrack in particular, although to be fair, he wasn’t fussy, he would even drink Mr. Henderson's "phorene" brandy, when he got the chance.

Anglos generally in the UK, Australia and the Gulf have a better network well as in other countries, especially in the US rarely bump into another AI. So Charlotte started a thread in the PepperWater forums and if you are in the USA, click here to visit that thread just to say "Yes men, i'm also in the USA" and we could have a rough count, till we figure out another way to do this.
Michael and Janice and Rudy - Part X I
The Seed is Sowed
A big picnic was being organised to the church and seminary at Covelong, everybody was going, and so was Janice and Rudy. Two buses were hired and it was filled to capacity. The day arrived and you could feel the excitement in the air, even at 5 o'clock in the morning. Everybody piled on with all their "saamaans" (stuff!). Getting Anglo Indian priorities right, there was a lot of food, drink and guitars, blankets and more food. As soon as they cleared the city everyone settled down to looking at the passing scenery. Then a couple of lads started singing. Anglo Indians and Community singing, eh? Nobody, except probably the Welsh, do it so well. Of course it was "she'll be coming round the mountain" and everybody had a go at making up verses. Some of them were quite naughty (all the girls would giggle and play at being really bashful) like:
I have to move this story along, (or rather) Fast Forward it, to graduation day at both the colleges. Of course, the three of them attained their degrees, with flying colours, Honours even. Photographs of them in their cap'n'gown were taken by a professional, with an order for copies for the living room (a big one) and one for dad's office desk, not forgetting a copy each for the grand parents and the God Parents. There was a joint party in Mada Church Hall, to which everyone who was anyone, was invited. Lots of Bondas and Vadays, hot stuff and puffs and a couple of Muslim cooks making a huge "dekshi" of mutton "Biriyani". For pudding there was "paniyaram" (yum yum) and "pustoles", stuffed with sweetened coconut, --- and cumracuts and coconut squeet (ha) and a variety of flavored soft drinks.
I'm pretty sure, no matter where you grew up, you had Summer School, most probably organised by your local church. As a kid, I loved it and hated it at times. Now, I just have a lot of fun memories. Since it is summer in India, share with is your fun, or other memories from Summer School, whether you were attending as a kid or a teacher or was (are) just a parent!
A member brought up an interesting question in the forums and I though would be interesting to bring this discussion up to the front page.
Are we a dissolving race? With Anglos moving out of India at a rapid pace, will there be few or any left in India? Tell us your thoughts, we'd love to hear them!
